Strbske Pleso - founded: 1872, altitude [m]: 1350 - It is the highest settlement in the High Tatras, and the character of this area is created by a 19,76 hectare lake which is the second largest on the Slovak side of the High Tatras. Strbske Pleso was founded as the center of tourism and later new curative houses, recreation facilities and a top sport complex were built. read more...
Vysne Hagy - founded: 1881, altitude [m]: 1100 - At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century the community was a site of a tourism-training center. Stary Smokovec - founded: 1793, altitude [m]: 990 - The oldest Tatra settlement is now the administrative center of the High Tatras. The town is the Mountain Rescue Service, offices, several hotels, travel agencies and ski rental services. Nova Polianka - founded: 1956, altitude [m]: 1040 - The youngest Tatra community was formed as a military curative institute, which is restricted in its character and quite strict regime. Tatranska Kotlina - founded: 1882, altitude [m]: 760 - The Belianska Cave was discovered in 1881. Four medical houses were built to high standard and were later changed to curative sanatoriums for treating unspecified respiration illnesses. In addition a new pavilion which specialized in applying speleotherapy (therapy in natural caves) was established. read more...
