Without quality entrance to recreational area tourism would decline. One of the priorities of frequent visiting is developed transport as well as infrastructure of hotels, sport centres and conditions for tourism. Developed transport ensures comfortable entrance to natural beautys of our Hight Tatras. You can get into area of Hight Tatras by road travelling, but rail connection has more important function and there is also an airport near Poprad, where international flights are provided. There is also rare funicular railway directly in this area.
Road transportion - Road connection between Poprad and Stary Smokovec is 14 km
long and it is very important as well as a highway connecting Ruzomberok and Vazec. The main road
connection in the area of Tatras is cesta Slobody (Road of Liberty) crossing whole foot of Tatras
mountains and connecting all Tatras villages from Podbanske to country border Lysa Polana. This road
was open as tourist road on September 4th in 1889 and Maria Theresa was in attendance at it. Later the
road was made wider to 6 metres and more stable. The first car was driven downthis road in the year
1900 and name of the road was changed to cesta Slobody in 1919. At the end of 60´s of 20th century it
was made longer in part between Strbske Pleso and Podbanske. Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine an
existence of tourism in the smallest mountains in the world without our “Tatras road motorway“.
Rail transportion - A developement of railway system helped to increase an
interest in Tatras. A railway line between Kosice and Bohumin (from 1882 connecting also Bratislava and
Vienna) connecting Tatras with the rest of the world, is not important only in area of Slovakia. From
1896 there is also a cog – wheel train connecting Tatranska Strba and Strbske Pleso as the only one of
this kind in High Tatras. Nowadays whole system of railway lines is electrified and the tramcars connect
all villages between Strbske Pleso and Tatranska Lomnica. At the end of year 2000 a modernization of
tramcars started. There is a newer model of tramcars to make your travelling comfortable, safer and
quieter. A capacity of the new model of tramcars is 200 persons. In the present it is possible for
passengers to take their cars with to the train connecting Prague and Poprad. More informations you find on

replaced by cabine cable railway in 1973 and from the year 1995 there is a modern cabine cable railway.
The line is 3450 m long and 864 m high. The ride takes 14 minutes and maximum transport capacity is 900
persons per hour. The old cable railway from 1937 was replaced ten years ago by modern cabine cable
